17 Days China Journey Through the Wonders of Yunnan and Tibet

Welcome to this breathtaking journey through the heart of Southwest China and the Tibetan Plateau! From Kunming’s mild climate, to explore the stunning landscapes of Dali, the ancient Tea-Horse Road in Shaxi, and the Naxi culture of Lijiang; then starting from Shangri-La, the Tibetan customs become stronger, and in Tibet, experience Lhasa’s spiritual heart, the majestic Everest Base Camp, and historic monasteries in Shigatse and Gyangtse before concluding in Chengdu.Along the way, you’ll experience breathtaking natural wonders and rich cultural heritage, making this a profound adventure across the high-altitude Tibetan plateau and the treasures of Yunnan.



Day 1: Arrive in Kunming

Upon arrival of Kunming, you will meet with our private guide and be transferred to hotel for check-in. After that, you can choose to explore the ever-spring city by your own, or enjoy a good rest at hotel after a long-time flight journey.

 

Day 2: Stone Forest and High-speed Train to Dali

Nestled in central Kunming, Green Lake Park is famed for its willow-lined paths, tranquil lake views, and seasonal flocks of migratory birds. You may see locals and visitors gathering here to stroll, dance, or boat amid lush gardens and vibrant cultural energy. Continue to visit the bustling Flower and Bird Market, which brims with colorful blooms, exotic plants, caged songbirds, and traditional handicrafts. Then we drive one and half hour to visit Stone Forest, a breathtaking karst landscape of jagged rock pillars. Back to Kunming, we will take high-speed train to Dali.

 

Day 3: Dali

We begin the tour in Dali from the Three Pagodas Temple, a 9th-century architectural marvel where ancient Buddhist history meets tranquil gardens—accessible via convenient shuttle rides. Glide through rustic villages and fields on an electric bicycle tour, soaking in pastoral landscape with a stop at Yang Liping Theater. Cap your day wandering Dali Ancient City’s cobblestone lanes, brimming with Bai-style courtyards, handicraft stalls, and echoes of the historic Tea Horse Road. 

 

Day 4: Dali to Shaxi

This morning starts in Xizhou Old Town, a Bai ethnic treasure with Ming-Qing courtyards and buttery "Xizhou baba" pancakes. Delve into Zhoucheng Village, the heart of traditional tie-dye craftsmanship, where indigo fabrics flutter like folk art. Glide across West Lake on a serene boat cruise, framed by misty mountains and fishing villages. Finally, journey onward to Shaxi Ancient Town, a cobblestone relic of the Tea Horse Road, where you will enjoy locals’ slow-paced rural life.

 

Day 5: Shaxi to Lijiang

If you are lucky, we will join the locals to explore the lively Shaxi Market held on each Friday. Stroll along the ancient streets of Shaxi Ancient Town, with stops at the old temple, the ancient stage and Yujin Bridge, to admire the traditional architecture, enjoy the scenic beauty and experience its rich history and culture, and immerse yourself in the charm of this quaint town. Continue to Jianchuan and visit local wood-carving workshop to witness skilled artisans carving beautiful patterns into wood, and you can even try your hand at this ancient art. Then we drive to Lijiang Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage gem of cobblestone lanes, gurgling canals, and Naxi ethnic charm, where ancient Tea Horse Road history mingles with lantern-lit courtyards beneath the gaze of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. If time permits, we will take a visit of Naxi Museum and Black Dragon Pool Park.

 

Day 6: Lijiang

This morning, we ascend Jade Dragon Snow Mountain via the Yunshanping Cable Car to alpine meadows with sweeping views of jagged peaks sacred to the Naxi people. Descend to Blue Moon Valley, where turquoise pools mirror snow-capped ridges, then witness the epic Impression Lijiang Show, a grand outdoor performance celebrating local ethnic traditions against the mountain’s backdrop. Complete your journey in Baisha Village, famed for Ming-era murals and rustic charm, and Shuhe Old Town, a quieter Tea Horse Road gem of stone bridges and murmuring streams.

 

Day 7: Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangrila

We start the day from the morning market of the old city, where many locals gather for fresh produce, traditional crafts, and authentic Yunnan snacks, capturing the vibrant pulse of daily Naxi culture. Continue to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, a dramatic canyon where the roaring Jinsha River thunders between 5,000-meter cliffs, which offers breathtaking views of towering cliffs and turbulent waters. Drive to Shangrila with stop at an observation point to enjoy the nice landscape combined with snow montains, fields and villages. Our tour in Shangrila begins from Songtsam Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist gem dubbed "Little Potala," where golden rooftops glow above prayer halls echoing with chants. In the evening, we will explore the ancient Tibetan town of Dukezong, with its maze - like streets and traditional architecture.

 

Day 8: Flight to Lhasa

Napa Lake unfolds as a seasonal wetland sanctuary—crystal waters reflecting snow-capped peaks in winter, blooming grasslands in summer. Embrace warmth in a local Tibetan family visit, sharing butter tea and stories of nomadic traditions. Transfer to airport and take the flight to Lhasa. After some time of adapting to the high altitude of Tibet, we will go to Zong Jiao Lu Kang Park, from the tranquil ponds inside of which you can see the reflection of Patala Palace, you may also have the chance to see loca Tibetan people dancing or even practicing Tibetan opera.

 

Day 9: Lhasa

In the heart of Lhasa, the Potala Palace stands majestically on the Red Hill, a symbol of Tibetan architecture and spirituality. Nearby, Chakpori Hill offers a panoramic view of the city, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of the palace from a distance. At the foot of the hill, the Jokhang Monastery is a sacred site for Tibetan Buddhists, where the air is filled with the fragrance of incense and the sound of chanting. Surrounding the monastery is the bustling Barkhor Street, a vibrant marketplace where you can wander through narrow alleys, explore traditional Tibetan shops, and experience the lively local culture.

 

Day 10: Lhasa

Begin your day with a visit to Norbulingka, the Tibetan Royal Garden, where you can wander through its lush green spaces, traditional pavilions, and ancient trees, immersing yourself in the tranquility and history of this former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas. Next, head to the Khawachen Tibetan Carpet and Wool Crafts Factory to witness the intricate craftsmanship of Tibetan carpets and wool products, learning about the traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. In the afternoon, make your way to Sera Monastery, famous for its lively debates among monks. Watch as they engage in passionate discussions, clapping their hands and making dramatic gestures, a unique and fascinating display of Tibetan monastic culture. As evening falls, head to the night market at the Great Mosque of Lhasa, where the air is filled with the aroma of street food and the vibrant energy of vendors and shoppers, offering a perfect way to end your day with a taste of local flavors and culture.

 

Day 11: Lhasa to Shigatse

The last day at Lhasa starts at the bustling Morning Market, where you can experience the vibrant local life, sample fresh produce, and interact with friendly vendors. From there, head to the Local Tibetan Opera Training School to witness the unique and colorful world of Tibetan opera, observing students practicing traditional dance moves and vocal techniques. Afterward, embark on a scenic drive to Shigatse, taking in the breathtaking landscapes along the way. Upon arrival, explore the local market, filled with an array of goods and the aroma of local snacks, and then stroll down the pedestrian street, where you can enjoy the lively atmosphere, shop for souvenirs, and experience the authentic charm of Shigatse.

 

Day 12: Xegar

In the morning we will visit the renowned Tashilunpo Monastery in Shigatse, an important center of Tibetan Buddhism known for its stunning architecture, sacred relics, and the famous giant statue of Maitreya Buddha. Take your time to wander through the monastery’s courtyards and chapels, absorbing the spiritual atmosphere and observing the monks in their daily activities. Afterward, set off on a scenic drive to New Tingri (Xegar), passing through picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and vast grasslands. As you approach New Tingri, you’ll be greeted by the town’s modern yet charming atmosphere, where you can explore the local market, interact with the friendly locals, and perhaps enjoy a traditional Tibetan meal, making this a memorable part of your adventure.

 

Day 13: Overnight at EBC

Embark on an unforgettable journey as you drive towards the majestic Everest Base Camp, where the awe-inspiring sight of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, will take your breath away. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Himalayas, with their snow-capped peaks and dramatic landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Upon arrival at the base camp, take a moment to soak in the grandeur and feel the sense of accomplishment of standing at the foot of this legendary mountain. Nearby, visit the historic Rongbuk Monastery, one of the highest monasteries in the world, perched dramatically against the backdrop of the towering Everest. Here, you can explore the ancient monastic buildings, learn about the spiritual significance of this sacred site, and perhaps even meet some of the resident monks who live in this remote and serene environment. The combination of natural beauty and spiritual heritage makes this a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

 

Day 14: Gyangtse

Today we set off on a scenic drive to Gyangtse, a charming town known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. Upon arrival, visit the magnificent Palkhor Monatery, a prominent religious site in the region. Within the monastery, marvel at the exquisite murals and statues that adorn its halls, showcasing the intricate artistry of Tibetan craftsmanship. The highlight of your visit will be the Kumbum Stupa, also known as the “Hundred Thousand Buddha Pagoda.” This remarkable structure is adorned with thousands of Buddha statues and intricate carvings, making it a truly awe-inspiring sight. After exploring the monastery, head to Mt. Dzongri Ancient Castle, where you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The castle’s ruins offer a glimpse into the region’s storied past and provide a perfect spot for a leisurely walk or a moment of quiet reflection. Also, don't miss the night view after the lights are turned on.

 

Day 15: Tsedang

In the morning we drive to visit the stunning Yamdroyumtso Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Tibet, known for its vibrant turquoise waters and breathtaking mountain backdrop. Along the way, pass by the majestic Kurola Glacier, where you can stop to admire the awe-inspiring icy landscape and take in the grandeur of the towering peaks. Continue your journey to Tsedang, a region rich in cultural and historical significance. On the way, make a stop at Jiedexiu Town in Gongga County, famous for its traditional Tibetan craftsmanship. Here, visit a local “Bangdian” (Tibetan Apron) workshop, where you can witness the intricate weaving process of these colorful and culturally significant aprons, learn about their history, and perhaps even purchase a unique piece as a souvenir.

 

Day 16: Flight to Chengdu

We begin with a visit to the ancient Yumbulhahkang Palace, perched on a hilltop and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This historic site, once the residence of the first Tibetan king, is steeped in legend and cultural significance, and its architecture and artifacts provide a fascinating glimpse into Tibet’s early history. Next, head to Samye Monastery, one of the most important and oldest monasteries in Tibet. Marvel at its unique architecture, which combines elements of Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian styles, and explore its vast complex, including the central temple, surrounding chapels, and the sacred circumambulation path. After immersing yourself in the spiritual atmosphere of Samye, it’s time to drive to the airport, where you’ll catch your flight to Chengdu. As you leave Tibet behind, you’ll carry with you the memories of its rich cultural heritage and the stunning natural beauty that make it such a unique and unforgettable destination.

 

Day 17: Departure from Chengdu

The last day tour will start with a visit to the Panda Base, where you can observe the adorable giant pandas in their natural habitat and learn about conservation efforts. Then, head to Wenshu Temple, a serene and historic Buddhist temple known for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful architecture. Afterward, stroll through People’s Park, where you can enjoy the lush greenery and watch locals drinking tea or playing mahjong. Finally, explore Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi, a charming pedestrian street filled with unique shops, cafes, and street food vendors, offering a taste of Chengdu’s vibrant culture. Once you’ve soaked in all the sights and flavors, transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
