Xi’an
Discover the Unparalleled History of Ancient China
Xi’an, anciently known as Chang’an (meaning “eternal peace”), is the capital of Shaanxi Province and the biggest city in the northwest of China. As the first of China’s Four Great Ancient Capitals, Xi’an has been the capitals of 12 dynasties in ancient China, thus leaving it abundant legacies to this city. It was also the starting point on the Silk Road, linking up the oriental and western civilizations. The saying “In the west, there is Rome, in the east, Chang’an” best described the position of Xi’an at that time. Nowadays, Xi’an enjoys an equal fame with Athens, Cairo, and Rome as “one of the four major capitals of ancient civilization”.

Chinese Shadow Puppetry
Inscribed in 2011 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theater show acted by colorful silhouette figures made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. In ancient time, people sat next to campfires and watched stories played out on rock walls by shadows cast by using their hands or figurines. It also pretty popular now, you can visit one traditional Chinese courtyard in Xi’an to watch the real show and even try to tell your stories with this shadow puppetry, that must be very interesting.
